Toledo Police release body-worn camera footage of officer interaction with juveniles as internal investigation continues

Toledo, OH – The Toledo Police Department has released body-worn camera footage related to an incident involving officers and juveniles that is currently under internal investigation.

According to the department, the interaction occurred on May 20 at approximately 7:28 p.m. in the 2000 block of Sylvan Avenue after officers observed several juveniles crossing the street outside of a designated crosswalk.

Police said the encounter was recorded on officers’ body-worn cameras. Officials noted that no arrests were made, no citations were issued, and no police report was generated as a result of the interaction.

The department also identified the officers involved as Officer Zachary Cairl, who joined the Toledo Police Department in November 2016, and Officer Chase Baney, who was hired in October 2021.

Officials emphasized that the internal investigation remains ongoing and is intended to fully review the incident, including the actions and conduct of the officers involved. The department stated that the release of the footage should not be interpreted as a final determination regarding the investigation’s findings.

In a statement, Toledo Police Chief Michael Troendle said the department recognizes the community’s interest in the case and released the footage as part of its commitment to transparency.

“We understand that many in the community have questions and concerns regarding this incident,” Troendle said. “Releasing the body-worn camera footage is part of the department’s commitment to transparency while the investigation continues.”

The department has not announced when the internal investigation is expected to be completed.
