TOLEDO, Ohio — A Toledo man was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years in prison for the fatal shooting of his 15-year-old ex-girlfriend, officials said.
Robert Shields III, 19, entered an Alford plea in May 2025 to charges of aggravated burglary and involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Jaylah Perry.
Court records indicate that Shields had an on-again, off-again relationship with Perry. On March 17, 2024, Shields forcefully entered Perry’s home during an argument, according to police reports.
Witnesses told investigators that during the confrontation, Shields pressured Perry to place a gun in her mouth before shooting her in the head. Perry succumbed to her injuries three days later, on March 20, 2024.
“This case is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly intimate partner violence can escalate,” said Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia R. Bates. “Jaylah’s life was taken far too soon. I hope this outcome brings some measure of justice to her loved ones.”
