Lucas County Voters Approve Replacement Levy for Metroparks Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – Voters in Lucas County approved a replacement levy for Metroparks Toledo in the May primary election, signaling continued support for the region’s park system. The new 10-year levy, while maintaining the same milage rate as the previous one, could lead to higher costs for property owners, as it is based on recent home values rather than those from 2007.

The previous levy, which had been in place for years, was calculated using property values from nearly two decades ago. With rising home values since then, many homeowners will likely see an increase in their tax bills under the new replacement levy.

Metroparks Toledo officials explained that the levy is crucial for the day-to-day operations of the 19 metroparks spread across the region. Over the past seven years, attendance at the parks has surged by 62%, significantly driving up operational costs. In addition to supporting park maintenance, the funds will help with improvements and continued programming to meet the growing demand.

“We’ve seen a tremendous increase in visitation, and with it, the costs of running the parks have risen,” said a representative from the Metroparks system. “This levy will help ensure the parks remain accessible and well-maintained for everyone.”

The new levy will provide essential funding for the parks over the next decade, allowing Metroparks Toledo to continue offering a wide array of outdoor activities, educational programs, and events for residents and visitors alike. While property owners may face higher taxes, park advocates argue the benefits of a well-maintained, accessible park system make it a worthwhile investment for the community’s well-being and quality of life.

As the region continues to grow, the levy’s approval ensures that Metroparks Toledo can adapt to increased demand, while preserving the green spaces that contribute to the area’s appeal.
