TOLEDO, Ohio – A tragic accident Thursday night claimed the life of one person and left another seriously injured when a tree and power lines fell onto a vehicle near the intersection of Secor Road and Laskey Road.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m., according to officials on the scene. Two people were inside the vehicle at the time. Emergency crews arrived to find a large tree had collapsed, bringing power lines down with it, directly onto the vehicle.
The passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was extricated by Toledo Fire & Rescue personnel and transported to a nearby hospital. Their condition has not been publicly released but was described as serious.
A representative from Toledo Fire & Rescue called the incident a “freak accident,” noting that the tree appeared to have been rotting before it fell. Officials said there was no severe weather in the area at the time of the collapse.
The area was temporarily closed off as crews worked to remove debris and ensure the safety of nearby power lines.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved, pending notification of next of kin.
