TOLEDO, Ohio — A major transformation is taking place in Toledo as the former Scott Park Campus begins its redevelopment into a state-of-the-art educational hub. The project, which has been years in the making, marks a significant milestone for Toledo Public Schools (TPS) and the local community. On Thursday morning, district leaders celebrated a major step forward in the multi-million dollar project that promises to reshape the future of education in the region.
The ambitious plan, funded by a bond approved by voters in November, will breathe new life into the 143-acre site once home to the University of Toledo’s Scott Park Campus. The redevelopment is set to include a mix of academic, vocational, and recreational facilities, offering a wide range of opportunities for students and community members alike.
Dr. Romules Durant, Superintendent of Toledo Public Schools, shared his vision for the project, describing it as a comprehensive educational environment. “We’re bringing education, residency, along with recreation, all on this campus,” Durant explained. “It is 143 acres and 288,000 square feet of opportunity.”
The project is designed to serve not only middle and high school students but also adult learners. TPS leaders revealed plans for specialized programs including a Construction and Architectural Design Academy, as well as an Educator Academy, aimed at training the next generation of teachers. These offerings will cater to various student needs and skills, providing a pathway to success in both academic and vocational careers.
In addition to these educational programs, the campus will serve as a resource for adults looking to further their education. College-level courses will be offered in partnership with Owens Community College, helping adults continue their education while balancing work and family life. Dr. Durant emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating that the campus will even provide daycare services to ensure parents can pursue their studies without worry.
The new educational hub will be more than just a place for learning. TPS officials have plans to include recreational amenities such as a sports dome and housing options. These additions will enhance the overall campus experience, allowing parents to support their children’s education while accessing health care and recreational activities all in one location.
“This will be a space where a parent can come and not have to leave,” Durant said. “Their kids will be able to earn seventh through bachelor’s degrees, and at the same time, they will be able to access healthcare, recreation, sports, and other essential services.”
With a price tag of approximately $100 million, the project will be carried out in phases, with the first phase expected to open in August of next year. The Construction and Architectural Design Academy is slated to be the first of the new facilities to welcome students. The entire campus redevelopment is anticipated to be completed within the next five years.
As Toledo invests in its future, the Scott Park Campus redevelopment promises to become a vital resource for generations to come, helping shape the city’s educational landscape and supporting the broader community in ways that go beyond the classroom.
