Father of Slain Toledo Police Officer Faces Felony Charges for Theft and Fraud

Toledo, Ohio – The father of a fallen Toledo police officer has been charged with felony theft and telecommunications fraud in connection with misuse of funds from a foundation established in his son’s memory.

Tony Dia, the father of Officer Anthony Dia, who was killed in the line of duty on July 4, 2020, has been charged with two fourth-degree felonies—grand theft and telecommunications fraud. The charges stem from an investigation by the Ohio Attorney General’s office regarding the Officer Anthony Dia Foundation, which was created to honor his son’s legacy and support related charitable efforts.

According to the Lucas County Prosecutor’s Office, Dia is accused of stealing approximately $26,000 from the foundation between August 2022 and January 2024. The charges follow an investigation that revealed allegations of misuse of funds, including failure to refund individuals who participated in a motorcycle raffle organized by the foundation.

The Ohio Attorney General’s office had been looking into the case after receiving complaints from donors who did not receive the promised refunds for their contributions. The investigation by the Attorney General’s office was confirmed by the I-TEAM, which documented the ongoing inquiry into the alleged financial misconduct.

In a statement, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost expressed his support for the legal proceedings. “This is a tough case, stemming from a very difficult situation; however, the rule of law means the same rules for everyone,” he said. “I commend Lucas County Prosecuting Attorney Julia Bates for seeking justice and restitution.”

Tony Dia has reportedly cooperated with authorities during the investigation and has been issued a summons to appear for arraignment. During this hearing, the court will set a pretrial date or possibly consider a resolution to the case.

The charges against Dia come as a significant development for the family and the local community, especially following the tragic death of Officer Anthony Dia. The case is expected to draw continued attention as it moves through the legal process.
