Toledo, Ohio – Two men have been convicted following a police sting aimed at dismantling a local dirt bike theft ring. Tyrice McCall, 21, and Dameir Layson, 18, both entered plea deals in January, admitting their involvement in the scheme that had targeted dirt bike owners across the city.
Court records indicate that McCall pleaded no contest to charges of attempted grand theft of a motor vehicle and four counts of theft. He is scheduled for sentencing on February 20. Meanwhile, Layson also entered a no contest plea to attempted grand theft of a motor vehicle, theft, and four counts of misdemeanor theft. His sentencing is set for March 13.
The charges stem from a series of thefts that occurred throughout 2024. Toledo Police Department (TPD) reported receiving at least ten separate complaints over the course of two months about a theft scheme involving dirt bikes. According to TPD, the scheme worked as follows: sellers would arrange online meetings with potential buyers who would show up to test drive the dirt bikes. However, the “buyers” would take the bikes for a spin and then simply not return.
The sting operation, designed to catch those responsible for the thefts, led to the arrest of four individuals: McCall, Layson, Tewan Lucas, 24, and Steven Ford, 27. The operation successfully brought attention to the growing issue of dirt bike thefts in the area.
As the court proceedings unfold, McCall and Layson will face sentencing in the coming months, while law enforcement continues to investigate additional thefts linked to the scheme. The arrests serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by Toledo Police to combat property crime in the city.
