WOOD COUNTY, Ohio — As the annual Walleye Run draws anglers from across the region, the Wood County Fairgrounds has stepped up to offer a place for out-of-town visitors to camp. With the Lucas County Recreation Center unable to accommodate campers this year, the fairgrounds, located just 20 minutes from the Maumee River, has opened its gates to provide a convenient and accessible option for those attending the popular fishing event.
The fairgrounds’ decision to host campers allows fishermen to stay close to the prime fishing spots along the river, such as Side Cut Metropark, making it easier to enjoy the Walleye Run. Paul Perry, a representative from the Wood County Fairgrounds and president of the Wood County Agricultural Society, shared that the fairgrounds have already seen a steady flow of fishermen setting up camp. He emphasized the economic and cultural benefits the arrangement brings to the region.
“Having an opportunity to host fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts at our fairgrounds is always a win for the Bowling Green area,” Perry said. “It also gives visitors the chance to support local businesses, from stores to restaurants, and engage with the community.”
The fairgrounds, which already hosts three campouts each year, has demonstrated a willingness to expand its offerings if demand increases in the future. With more visitors flocking to the area during the fishing season, the Wood County Fairgrounds could become a vital destination for anglers looking for both convenience and community engagement.
As the Walleye Run continues to draw attention, local officials hope that the collaboration between the fairgrounds and visiting anglers will prove to be a model for other communities near popular fishing destinations. The economic and cultural impact of such arrangements could benefit both the local community and the outdoor enthusiasts who visit each year.
