Wayman Palmer YMCA in Toledo Unveils Innovative Family-Oriented Changing Area

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Wayman Palmer YMCA is drawing attention in the Toledo community with the introduction of a groundbreaking family-friendly changing area. The new facility aims to offer a more secure, private, and inclusive space for families, setting it apart from traditional YMCA layouts.

The biggest change at the Wayman Palmer YMCA is its departure from traditional locker rooms. Instead of large, open locker rooms, the facility features private stalls, lockers, and a universal changing area, designed to ensure both comfort and security for members. This new approach allows parents to feel more at ease when bringing their children, particularly as they grow older.

Ameen Horn, a member of the YMCA, shared his thoughts on the new design. “As my kids got older, they didn’t feel comfortable going into the men’s bathroom. Now, with this new setup, I can stay close to them and have peace of mind, without having to constantly check on them outside the restroom,” Horn said.

A major selling point of the new facility is the universal private changing area, which provides a safe, enclosed space for families of all types. The area is designed with security in mind, ensuring privacy while families go about their routines. The facility has a clear policy displayed prominently, indicating that nudity is only permitted within private rooms, reinforcing the emphasis on comfort and discretion for all users.

Brad Toft, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Toledo, explained the philosophy behind the new design. “We want to provide the highest level of privacy and safety for our members. We understand that today’s world demands more secure, private spaces for families, and that’s exactly what we’ve created,” Toft said. He also noted that the facility is fully certified in child abuse prevention and undergoes regular background checks for all members. Every member’s information is cross-checked with a national database to ensure safety and security.

The new facility includes more than 20 private, lockable areas where members can change or store their belongings. For added security, cameras are installed in public areas, and windows provide clear visibility for lifeguards and other staff members. Staff members are also regularly stationed to monitor the space, ensuring that the environment remains safe and welcoming.

The YMCA encourages local residents to visit the facility and see the changes for themselves. The Wayman Palmer YMCA’s new family-focused design reflects a growing trend of prioritizing privacy and safety in public spaces. By addressing the concerns of parents and creating an environment that fosters security and comfort, the Wayman Palmer YMCA is positioning itself as a model for family-friendly public facilities.

As the community embraces these changes, the Wayman Palmer YMCA is setting a new standard for how public spaces can cater to the needs of modern families, offering both a secure environment and a welcoming atmosphere.
