TOLEDO, Ohio — A man arrested last month after allegedly threatening to show up to class with a bomb strapped to his chest has received a suspended sentence in a Toledo courtroom.
Jared Courtright, 20, pleaded no contest to a charge of inducing panic in connection with the incident, which took place on February 20. In court, he was sentenced to 180 days at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, though the sentence was suspended. Instead, Courtright will serve one year on probation.
The charge of making a terroristic threat was dismissed after the prosecutor entered a nolle prosequi, meaning the case was dropped for the time being.
The threat was reportedly made in a group chat for students at another university. Authorities stated that several students in the group chat saw the post, prompting an investigation by University of Toledo campus police.
Although the situation raised significant concerns, Courtright will avoid jail time, provided he adheres to the conditions of his probation. The case has drawn attention to the severity of online threats and the legal consequences that can follow such actions.
