TOLEDO, Ohio — A local man is picking up the pieces after a devastating house fire left him with nothing but a few belongings and the painful memory of losing his three cats. Kenneth Heggie, a longtime worker at Local 45, was at work on January 8 when he received the heartbreaking news that his home had caught fire.
“When I got to my house, I saw about five fire trucks trying to put out the blaze,” Heggie said. “By the time I arrived, it was already too late.”
The fire destroyed the home that Heggie had worked so hard to pay off and, tragically, claimed the lives of his three cats. Despite the devastation, he had no insurance coverage for the home at the time. Heggie had been planning to reinstate his insurance shortly before the fire occurred, but his plans were cut short as he retired just two days after the incident.
“I’ve worked as a pipe insulator for 36 years,” Heggie said. “I was gearing up for retirement, and my last day at work was actually January 10. I didn’t expect this to happen.”
Since the fire, Heggie has been staying with his daughter while he figures out his next steps. Though he salvaged a few items of clothing and some valuables from the wreckage, much of his personal property was lost in the fire. The 64-year-old man believes the fire may have been accidentally started by his cats, but the exact cause remains uncertain.
In the face of this tragedy, the Toledo community has rallied around Heggie. 13 Action News, in partnership with the Yark Automotive Group, presented him with a check for $1,300 to help with the overwhelming costs of replacing his lost belongings.
“It’s going to help so much,” Heggie expressed. “I barely have anything clothing-wise. A few people have given me some clothes, but right now, I haven’t been able to retrieve anything from the house. This donation will really help me out.”
While the road to recovery is still long, the support from the community has provided Heggie with much-needed hope and relief. The check represents not just a financial contribution, but also a reminder of the kindness and generosity that can emerge in the face of tragedy.
