Toledo Fire & Rescue members compete in Jeep Fest strength event supporting mental health

Toledo, OH – The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department took part in the WaughStrong Competition on Friday, August 1, as the event officially kicked off its partnership with Jeep Fest, launching a weekend of festivities centered on community, strength, and resilience.

During the opening ceremony, WaughStrong founder Marcus Waugh received a Key to the City from Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz in recognition of his work supporting mental health resources for veterans and first responders.

WaughStrong, a nonprofit organization, raises awareness and funds to support mental health services for those who have served in the military and emergency response roles.

This year’s event drew forty athletes from across the country, including three members of the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department, who competed in a range of physically demanding challenges intended to test endurance and determination.

Competitive events included the Jeep Deadlift, Mud Tire Axle Squat, Max Sandbag to Shoulder, and the Rubber Ducky Front Hold. All of the contests were designed to highlight raw strength while encouraging camaraderie among participants and spectators.

Organizers said the competition reflects the spirit of the Jeep Fest weekend, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds in a shared effort to support a meaningful cause.

After raising more than $3,000 during last year’s event, WaughStrong reported that this year’s competition surpassed expectations, bringing in over $11,000. According to organizers, proceeds will go directly toward programs aimed at providing mental health support for veterans and first responders in need.

Members of the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department expressed pride in representing the city at the competition and supporting a nonprofit whose mission closely aligns with the department’s values.

Event organizers thanked the community and sponsors for their continued support, adding that plans are already underway for next year’s Jeep Fest partnership and WaughStrong Competition.
