RICHFIELD TWP., Ohio — Opposition continues to mount among residents of Richfield Township regarding a proposed zoning ordinance that could pave the way for a data center development on rural farmland.
Many locals express deep concern over the potential impact on their community’s character and the preservation of family farms that have existed for generations.
“When people see this land, they think about development and revenue for the county. But for us, this land represents everything we’ve ever loved and experienced. How do you put a price on that?” said Ashley Garlick, a member of the Loeffler family, whose farm lies near the southern border of Central Avenue by the Fulton-Lucas County line.
The proposal, if approved, would allow the farmland to be developed for commercial use, threatening the legacy of long-standing agricultural operations.
“We have a beautiful community here, with many churches and churchgoers. We want to maintain that atmosphere,” said Lillian Loeffler, also part of the farming family.
The issue drew a large crowd to the Richfield Township Trustee meeting on Monday, June 2, where residents voiced their concerns.
“There is no specific company ready to move in at this time,” said Richfield Township Trustee Any Lumbrezer. “This is a potential option presented by a realtor who suggested that the land could accommodate a data center. We want to weigh the pros and cons carefully and ensure we do our due diligence without upsetting residents.”
A special meeting to further discuss the proposal is scheduled for Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 7 p.m. at the Richfield Township Fire Hall.
As the community grapples with the possible change, many residents remain steadfast in their desire to protect the rural character and heritage of Richfield Township.
