Ohio Republicans Move to Regulate Delta-8 THC Products

Toledo, Ohio — Ohio Republicans are pushing for new regulations on intoxicating hemp products, particularly Delta-8 THC, which has raised concerns over its accessibility and safety. For years, lawmakers have debated how to regulate these products, which are derived from hemp and produce a marijuana-like high, though less potent than traditional cannabis.

Delta-8 THC has sparked controversy due to its unregulated status, allowing it to be sold in various locations, including gas stations and convenience stores, where it is easily accessible to minors. Governor Mike DeWine has repeatedly called for either a ban or stronger restrictions on Delta-8 products, citing public safety concerns.

This week, a new bill was introduced by State Senator Steve Huffman, who had previously advocated for a complete ban on Delta-8. The revised bill, Senate Bill 86, takes a different approach, proposing that Delta-8 products could still be sold, but only at licensed marijuana dispensaries. The measure is designed to regulate where and how these products are sold, ensuring that they are kept out of the hands of minors and are subject to oversight.

“The hemp industry is one of the few industries that’s coming before lawmakers and asking to be regulated,” said Jonathon Miller, president of the U.S. Hemp Roundtable. Miller stressed that industry leaders believe regulation is a better solution than prohibition, emphasizing that it would help ensure product safety while keeping the products away from young people.

Senate Bill 86 also includes provisions that would allow stores with liquor licenses to sell hemp-infused beverages. These products, which include drinks containing Delta-8 THC, are also gaining in popularity and would be subject to similar regulation.

The bill had its first hearing this week, and lawmakers are hopeful that it will progress quickly through the legislative process. Supporters of the bill believe it strikes the right balance between protecting consumers and allowing the hemp industry to thrive under clear guidelines.

As the debate over Delta-8 continues, Ohio lawmakers are working to ensure that intoxicating hemp products are properly regulated, safeguarding public health while allowing for growth in the hemp market.
