I-75 Reopened After Truck Strikes Overpass in Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio — Interstate 75 was reopened to traffic Sunday night, just days after a truck struck the North Detroit Avenue overpass, causing a major disruption in the Toledo area.

The incident occurred late Friday evening when a truck, traveling on I-75, collided with the overpass shortly before 6:30 p.m. The driver, a resident of Lambertville, Michigan, reported hearing a crash as the truck lifted, quickly realizing that the tow arm was raised. According to the Toledo Police Department, the truck’s load was unsecured at the time of the collision, which led to charges against the driver.

The driver had been en route from a scrapyard in Toledo to Perrysburg when the incident occurred. Although the truck’s bed was reportedly lowered when leaving the scrapyard, it somehow raised during the journey, ultimately striking the overpass.

Following the collision, all lanes of I-75 were closed between both ends of the I-475 loop, bringing traffic to a standstill early Saturday morning. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) worked swiftly to assess the damage, and the highway remained closed for more than 48 hours, with drivers advised to find alternate routes.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in connection with the crash. By Sunday night, ODOT confirmed that all lanes of I-75 had been reopened, allowing traffic to flow once again through the affected area. Despite the delays, the situation was resolved without further incident.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of securing loads when transporting materials, as even small lapses in safety can lead to significant disruptions on the road.
