TOLEDO, Ohio – Spring has arrived, and with it comes a familiar sight on Toledo’s roads: orange barrels. As construction season begins, crews, cones, and congestion are set to make their way across the city, prompting drivers to adjust their routines and be more cautious on the road.
This week marks National Work Zone Awareness Week, a time when transportation departments, safety organizations, and crews from across the country come together to remind drivers of the importance of paying attention in construction zones. With increased roadwork, the safety of both construction workers and motorists becomes a shared responsibility.
“Every year, we see an uptick in construction projects as weather permits, and with it, more roadwork zones,” said a spokesperson from the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). “While these projects are essential for improving infrastructure and keeping the roads safe, they also present potential hazards that require extra caution.”
Work zone crashes remain a significant concern nationwide, and in Ohio, statistics show a steady number of accidents involving construction zones each year. The National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse reports that in 2020 alone, over 800 fatalities occurred in work zones across the United States. Many of these crashes are attributed to drivers who fail to adjust their speed or be aware of sudden changes in traffic patterns as they approach construction sites.
ODOT, along with local law enforcement and other transportation agencies, urges drivers to remain vigilant when approaching work zones. “We ask all drivers to reduce their speed, follow posted signs, and be aware of workers in the area,” the ODOT spokesperson continued. “Simple actions like staying off the phone, keeping a safe distance, and respecting the work zone barriers can make a life-saving difference.”
Toledo’s ongoing infrastructure projects, including road repaving and bridge repairs, will contribute to higher traffic volumes and temporary lane closures throughout the city. The construction season is expected to stretch through the summer months, with more projects in the pipeline to improve roads and bridges.
As part of National Work Zone Awareness Week, safety messages will be posted on digital signs along highways and in high-traffic areas. Local authorities also plan to conduct outreach efforts to raise awareness and remind drivers about the importance of work zone safety.
While the orange barrels might be a hassle for commuters, they signify an essential part of maintaining and improving Toledo’s roadways. By heeding the advice of experts and taking extra care while driving through construction zones, both drivers and workers can play a vital role in ensuring safety this construction season.
