Wauseon, Ohio – In an effort to enhance public safety, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is offering an easy-to-use tool that allows residents to access the county’s sex offender registry. The online platform not only provides detailed information about offenders in the area but also offers an added layer of security by enabling individuals to receive notifications when someone registers nearby.
The registry, which is available on the sheriff’s office website, allows residents to search for sex offenders living in their community. The site provides specific details about each offender, including their offense, registration status, and classification level. Offenders are categorized into three tiers, with Tier 3 offenders being those who have committed the most serious crimes, such as rape.
Sheriff Roy Miller highlighted that the service goes a step further by allowing residents to set up geo-fences—a feature that alerts users whenever a sex offender registers within a set distance from their address. Whether someone wants to be notified when an offender is within a half-mile or a several-mile radius, the system is customizable to suit individual preferences.
“Once you’ve set up the geo-fence, you’ll get an email notification whenever someone new registers near your location,” Sheriff Miller explained. “It’s a simple but effective way for people to stay informed about their surroundings.”
The notification service has already attracted attention from local residents, with over 10% of Fulton County’s population having signed up for the alerts. This proactive approach to community safety has helped residents feel more secure by providing them with the tools to stay informed about offenders who have served their sentences and are now living in the area.
While the registry is a valuable resource, Sheriff Miller also emphasized the importance of understanding the varying levels of sex offenders. “Not all offenders are the same, and it’s important for residents to do their homework to fully understand the background of each individual,” he added.
The tool also offers resources for parents, with guidance on monitoring children’s behaviors and educating them about personal safety. This educational component aims to empower families with the knowledge needed to keep their children safe from potential risks.
As communities grow and change, knowing one’s neighbors and understanding the safety landscape becomes increasingly important. With access to the sex offender registry and customizable notifications, the residents of Fulton County can take a more informed approach to their safety, all from the convenience of their homes.
For those in Wauseon and surrounding areas, the registry serves as a reminder that staying vigilant and well-informed can be key in creating safer communities.
