Campfire Sparks Blaze in Sandusky County, Ohio

SANDUSKY COUNTY, Ohio — A fire that scorched approximately five to ten acres in Sandusky County Wednesday night has been linked to a campfire, according to the Clyde Fire Department’s assistant fire chief. The blaze, which started around 9 p.m. on North County Road 198, was quickly contained by local firefighters with no reported injuries.

The fire’s spread was fueled by wind, which carried embers from the campfire into nearby trees. Fire crews from Clyde, along with additional departments assisting with water supply, responded to the scene and worked through the night to prevent further damage.

“It’s a reminder of how quickly a campfire can turn dangerous, especially under windy conditions,” said the Clyde Fire Chief. “The embers carried by the wind contributed to the fire’s rapid spread.”

Thanks to the swift action of first responders, the fire was contained before it could cause significant harm to surrounding structures or wildlife. Investigations into the exact cause of the fire remain ongoing, but officials are stressing the importance of properly extinguishing campfires before leaving them unattended.

The incident serves as a cautionary tale for outdoor enthusiasts, underscoring the need for increased vigilance when handling open flames in dry or windy conditions.
