Lucas County Commissioners Approve New Policy to Support Local Businesses

Toledo, Ohio – In a move aimed at boosting the local economy, the Board of Lucas County Commissioners approved a new policy on Tuesday that prioritizes local businesses in procurement decisions. The policy, designed to support and sustain economic growth within the county, encourages county departments and agencies to give preferential consideration to businesses located within 50 miles of Lucas County.

Under the new policy, businesses that have been operating in the region for at least three years will have an advantage during the quote process. If these local businesses submit bids within two percent of the lowest offer, they will be invited to match the lowest bid, ensuring that they have an equal opportunity to secure county contracts.

The policy was approved unanimously by the Board of Lucas County Commissioners and is effective immediately. However, it will not apply in cases where federal or state funding requirements tied to procurement prohibit such preferences.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the commissioners to foster local economic development and keep taxpayer dollars circulating within the community. By encouraging county departments to prioritize local businesses, the county aims to strengthen its economic base and create opportunities for small businesses to thrive.

The new policy is expected to have a positive impact on local companies, allowing them to compete more effectively with larger, out-of-town firms, while ensuring that public funds benefit the local community.
