ODOT Urges Drivers to Exercise Caution as Snowplows Face Increasing Danger on Ohio Roads

TOLEDO, Ohio — As winter weather sweeps across Ohio, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is calling on drivers to exercise extra caution after a series of close calls involving snowplows and salt trucks. According to ODOT officials, there have been a disturbing number of incidents on the roadways in recent days, including three snowplows being struck by other vehicles in less than a week.

Kelsie Hoagland, a spokesperson for ODOT District 2, voiced concern over the rising number of crashes. “In my seven years on staff, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Hoagland said. “While we’ve had a few incidents over time, to have them back-to-back like this is really shocking.” The department reported that in the past two months alone, 28 crashes involving ODOT vehicles and other motorists have occurred across the state.

Hoagland and ODOT officials are urging drivers to be mindful of snowplows and follow critical safety advice. “If you are in a hurry, is it really worth it to put yourself and the other driver in danger? A driver who has to be out there doing their job, working in these hazardous conditions — do you really want to endanger both of you?” Hoagland asked.

ODOT’s message echoes familiar safety slogans, such as “Don’t crowd the plow” and “Ice and snow… take it slow.” Though often repeated, Hoagland emphasized that these phrases carry real, life-saving importance. “The importance behind those phrases is tremendous,” she said. “You have to be responsible behind the wheel so that they can help you and help all of us.”

Despite the increasing number of incidents, ODOT is grateful that none of the recent crashes have resulted in injuries. However, the department remains vigilant as crews continue to work around the clock to clear roads and keep Ohioans safe. With snowflakes already falling on Tuesday, ODOT officials reminded drivers to stay aware of their surroundings and to give snowplows the space they need to do their work effectively.

“The decisions you make as a driver impact more than just your own commute,” Hoagland said. “Every time we experience a winter weather event, we ask for the public’s help to keep our crews safe. As a passenger vehicle, you must be mindful and give them the space they need to operate.”

As winter weather continues to make roads unpredictable, ODOT is stressing the importance of safe driving practices, urging motorists to be patient, cautious, and respectful of the snowplows working to keep Ohio’s roads clear.
