Providence Township, Ohio — An 18-year-old driver struck two bicyclists on South River Road Saturday morning, resulting in the death of one cyclist, authorities reported.
The collision occurred at approximately 9:44 a.m. near the intersection of South River Road and Yawberg Road in Lucas County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
Troopers said the driver, an 18-year-old man from Grand Rapids, Ohio, was operating a 2011 Mercedes Benz E350 when he crossed the center line and struck two of three bicyclists traveling eastbound along the south edge of the roadway. The cyclists were riding on the edge line, and all were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
One of the bicyclists, 38-year-old Roseann Marie Peiffer of Maumee, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another cyclist, a 50-year-old also from Maumee, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized. The third cyclist was not involved in the collision.
The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by troopers.
The local cycling group Run Toledo issued a statement mourning the loss of Peiffer, describing her as a “true legend” and an inspiration within the biking community. “Roseann Peiffer wasn’t just an incredible rider; she was an inspiration to so many,” the organization said. “Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her life. Rest in peace.”
